What is Pallet?

 

Pallets are the one type of packaging that can include the small items to make them easy to move and transport, and improve work efficiency. There are both Single Used and Recycle Used, which must be selected to suit the product and its use.

So, this article explores the types of pallets, and their benefits on logistics.

 

 

 

What are the benefits of pallets?

	1. Improved load density and efficient space utilisation: Using pallets to collect small item, many of them into one piece. And if products are arranged in alternation layers, it will be have stability of pallet. Moreover we can use the plastic warp to increase the stability too.
	2. A reduction in transport costs: Using pallets allows for the movement of large quantities of goods at a time, which reduces labor costs for loading and unloading individual items.

3.      Better protection for products during shipping: Using pallets reduces the amount of physical contact involved in moving individual items, allowing packaging to last longer and reducing the need for secondary packaging.

4.      Increased safety: Pallet can reduce damage and loss during transportation, Especially  the less than container loads (LCL). If you ship a lot of small cartons, they can be more damaged or lost than when you ship a pallet.

 5.      Enhanced staff productivity: Using pallets allows for the movement of large quantities of goods at a time.

How should you decide which pallet to use?

 

1.     Product: Each type of pallets have different load bearing capacities. So, should choose the type of pallet that is suitable for your product. Moreover if the product need to be stored in temperature-controlled room/warehouse, the pallets should also moisture resistant.

2.     Usage : Use in warehouse or for shipping?

If use internal, in warehouse, should choose pallets for long term such as plastic pallets or metal pallet. But if use for shipping, should choose the light weight pallets, because the weight affects the transportation cost, such as paper/cardboard pallet or Wooden pallet.

3.     Type of Warehouse and Material Handling: if you have For warehouse are used AS/RS system, need to use only metal pallet. But for general warehouse, other pallets can be used but they must be selected to suit the application for the most efficiency.

Tip for Shippers:
When using wooden pallets for export shipments, always ensure they comply with IPPC requirements. In addition, carefully review the transportation regulations of each destination country, as specific rules may vary.

 

What is IPPC and Why It Matters When Using Wooden Pallets?

The International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) is a global phytosanitary standard that regulates the use of wood packaging materials such as pallets and crates in international trade. Its main objective is to prevent the worldwide spread of woodboring pests and plant diseases that can be carried through untreated timber.

 

The standard is developed and maintained by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and is legally enforced in major markets, including the United States, European Union, Australia, China, and Japan.
